It is a city popular with tourists due to the climate and central location. Attractions within the city include:
Ngarai Sianok canyon
Lobang Jepang - a network of underground bunkers & tunnels built by the Japanese during World War II
Jam Gadang - a large clock tower
Pasar Atas and Pasar Bawah markets
Taman Bundo Kanduang park. The park includes a replica Rumah Gadang (literally: big house, with the distinct Minangkabau roof architecture) used as museum of Minangkabau culture, and a zoo. The Dutch hilltop fort Benteng de Kock is connected to the zoo by the Limpapeh pedestrian overpass.
Bukittinggi is located high in the mountains and from here we can make beautiful excursions in the region, like to the Harau nature reserve, the Minangkabau palace in Pagaruyung and to lake Singkarak.
Nearby Bukittinggi, is the small village of Pandai Sikat where the local people produce beautiful woodcarving and weaving textiles.
Bukittinggi is one of the few cities on Sumatra where one can ride in a sado.
When Bukittinggi is mentioned under the name Fort de Kock in old travel stories and introductions to Sumatra and the Padang highlands, it is portrayed as the seat of a Resident, a marketplace, and a health resort for the army because of the cool, mild climate.
Along the road from Bukittinggi to Pekanbaru, descending a narrow pass through the low mountains of the Padang Highlands, all of a sudden a wide, almost four lane artery stretches for kilometres on end before the eyes of the startled visitor as a sign of the imminent appearance of the urban centre of Payakumbuh.
Bukittinggi has the general appearance of an urban centre with a crystallized system of symbolism, which is quite elaborate.
