Bukittinggi (Indonesian for "high hill") is one of the larger cities in West Sumatra, Indonesia, with a population of around 100,000 people. It is situated in the Minangkabau highlands, 90 km by road from the West Sumatran capital city of Padang. At 930 m above sea level, the city has a cool climate and it is located between the volcanoes Gunung Singgalang and Gunung Merapi (which is active). It is a city popular with tourists due to the climate and central location. Attractions within the city include:

  • Ngarai Sianok canyon
  • Lobang Jepang - a network of underground bunkers & tunnels built by the Japanese during World War II
  • Jam Gadang - a large clock tower
  • Pasar Atas and Pasar Bawah markets
  • Taman Bundo Kanduang park. The park includes a replica Rumah Gadang (literally: big house, with the distinct Minangkabau roof architecture) used as museum of Minangkabau culture, and a zoo. The Dutch hilltop fort Benteng de Kock is connected to the zoo by the Limpapeh pedestrian overpass.

When Bukittinggi is mentioned under the name Fort de Kock in old travel stories and introductions to Sumatra and the Padang highlands, it is portrayed as the seat of a Resident, a marketplace, and a health resort for the army because of the cool, mild climate.
Along the road from Bukittinggi to Pekanbaru, descending a narrow pass through the low mountains of the Padang Highlands, all of a sudden a wide, almost four lane artery stretches for kilometres on end before the eyes of the startled visitor as a sign of the imminent appearance of the urban centre of Payakumbuh.
Bukittinggi has the general appearance of an urban centre with a crystallized system of symbolism, which is quite elaborate.
