Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,784 km˛ (689 mi˛). 1,767 km˛ (682 mi˛) of it is land and 18 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,983 people, 20,743 households, and 12,342 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km˛ (82/mi˛). There are 22,742 housing units at an average density of 13/km˛ (33/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 68.70% White, 28.76% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 20,743 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.10% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.50% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.08.
