Bulloch County is a county located in the Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 55,983. The county's county seat is Statesboro, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,784 km˛ (689 mi˛). 1,767 km˛ (682 mi˛) of it is land and 18 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,983 people, 20,743 households, and 12,342 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km˛ (82/mi˛). There are 22,742 housing units at an average density of 13/km˛ (33/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 68.70% White, 28.76% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 20,743 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.10% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.50% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the county the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 26.20% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 17.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $29,499, and the median income for a family is $42,199. Males have a median income of $30,899 versus $22,479 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,080. 24.50% of the population and 11.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.60% of those under the age of 18 and 18.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
