The Bulo Burti Boubou (Laniarius liberatus) is a medium-sized passerine bird in the bushshrike family found 140 km inland on the Shabeelle river in central Somalia. This species is known only from an individual trapped in 1988 and the species was described using blood and feather samples. No specimen was collected as a type. The species name of liberatus was given due to this fact. It is critically endangered and it was not found during searches in 1989 and 1990. Its appearance has not been well documented. It resembles the Red-naped Bush-shrike L. ruficeps but has no red nape, is black, not grey, on the mantle, and is washed buffy-yellow on throat and breast. Birds and birding in Somalia (452 words)
** Bulo Burti Bush-Shrike Laniarius liberatus is not part of the accepted national list at this time and is included in List C - species requiring confirmation.
A single specimen was captured in an isolated patch of disturbed acacia scrub at Bulo Burti, central Somalia in January 1989, taken to Germany for study in captivity, and returned to Somalia and released at a different site in March 1990.
John Miskell (in correspondence) states that the reason it is not yet accepted on the national list is that the DNA of the only existing specimen was not compared to the all fl "morph" of the Tropical Boubou Laniarius aethiopicus.
