Bundesautobahn 6 (translates from German as Federal Motorway 6, short form Autobahn 6, abbreviated as BAB 6 or A 6), also known as Via Carolina (Between Nürnberg and the Czech border continuing to Prague) is a 432 km (268 mi) long German autobahn. It starts at the French border near Saarbrücken in the west and end at the Czech border near Waidhaus in the east. Some parts in eastern Bavaria are incomplete, requiring the use of smaller roads and the Bundesautobahn 93 to bridge the gap. The first plans for the A6 were laid out in 1935, construction on several parts began in 1938. In 1940, construction near Mannheim was stopped when a bridge collapsed that was being built across the Rhine, killing many workers. A new bridge was opened in 1953. Other parts of the A6 were completed in 1941. A part near Kaiserslautern was used as an airstrip by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Obwohl die A 6 grundsätzlich eine West-Ost-Verbindung darstellt, verläuft das Teilstück Viernheimer Dreieck bis Kreuz Walldorf etwa 30 km weitestgehend parallel zur A 5 in Nord-Süd-Richtung.
Der Ausbauzustand der A 6 entspricht ihrem Alter.
Im Gegensatz zu A 2 und A 4, die seit den 1990er Jahren als wichtige innerdeutsche Verbindungen grundlegend modernisiert werden, wurden bei A 6 und A 8 bisher (bis auf kleine Ausnahmen) darauf verzichtet, obwohl insbesondere das gestiegene Verkehrsaufkommen aus Osteuropa dies dringend erforderlich macht.

Für mich kristallisieren sich zwei hauptsächliche Kritikpunkte heraus: Gerade, wenn eine neue Version eines Navigationssystems auf den Markt kommt, dann ist die Motivation zum Umstieg nicht nur in den neuen Funktionen begründet, sondern zu einem nicht unerheblichen Teil auch in der aktuellen Kartenmaterial, das diesem normalerweise beiliegt.
Allerdings: Auf vielen Fahrten bin ich selbst mit zwei PDAs gefahren, auf dem einen mit dem MN6, auf dem anderen mit dem TomTom Navigator 6, und habe dabei in meiner Umgebung viele Stellen gefunden, die bereits Jahre geändert sind und in beiden Systemen noch den alten Stand haben, was das Ganze ein Stück relativiert.
Geräte mit internem GPS sind von der Zahl der Positionsupdates und damit der "Flüssigkeit" der Darstellung immer langsamer als solche, die mit einem externen Empfänger betrieben sind.
