Unlike other aboriginal tribes in Taiwan, the Bunun are widely dispersed across the island. With a population of around 37000, they are one of the larger aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. According to old Bunun tales: Long ago, in ancient times, there were two suns which made the earth unbearably hot. A father and son endured countless struggles and hardships to shoot down one of them. The sun that was shot then became what we call the moon. The moon, displeased with its weakened state, seized the father and son, demanding that hey return to their people and tell them that they must henceforth obey three commandments or face annihilation.
