Burhou was a Trinity House workboat originally built for the Admiralty in 1945 by James Martin & Sons, Granton, Edinburgh, and taken on by TH in 1948.
“Burhou was purchased in 1948 and was in service in the Channel Islands, stationed at Alderney from 1948 to 1972, part of her duty being the relief of the Casquets Lighthouse.
“With the advent of helicopter reliefs, THL Burhou transferred to Cowes in 1972 and was used as a workboat in The Solent until 1974.
The complex courting and greeting ceremonies of the Gannets can be studied from here; birds are continually arriving with fish for their young and to take their turn at the nest.
Although Burhou is a protected area and landing is not permitted at this time, Puffins can be seen from the two round-island boats, the Lady Maris of Braye and the Voyager.
Both boats go close to the island of Burhou, giving good views of Puffins, and both visit the Gannet colony on the Garden Rocks, giving very close and spectacular views.
