Burke is a town located in Caledonia County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,571.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 88.2 km˛ (34.1 mi˛). 88.2 km˛ (34.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.03% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,571 people, 641 households, and 455 families residing in the town. The population density is 17.8/km˛ (46.1/mi˛). There are 892 housing units at an average density of 10.1/km˛ (26.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.14% White, 0.25% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 641 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.83.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $35,268, and the median income for a family is $41,563. Males have a median income of $28,977 versus $19,509 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,697. 13.9% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The is a certain sound of logic to the statement, however, because Dr. Arnold did name Lyndon town for his son Josiah Lyndon, and Billymead (now Sutton) for another son, William, with the result that many subsequent histories have picked up the Burke story and repeated it.
While it cannot be proved, it is thought that the town really was named for Edmund Burke (1729-97) the great British statesman and orator, who was one of the foremost proponents of liberal treatment for the American colonies, and whose ideas on the subject were set forth in American Taxation and Conciliation with America.
At the time the town was chartered, Edmund Burke had just helped to force Lord North's resignation as prime minister because of his colonial policies and conduct of the war.
