Burkeville is a town located in Nottoway County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 489.


Geography

Burkeville is located at 37°11'14" North, 78°12'6" West (37.187131, -78.201702)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.99% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 489 people, 206 households, and 134 families residing in the town. The population density is 186.9/km˛ (486.3/mi˛). There are 248 housing units at an average density of 94.8/km˛ (246.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 62.78% White, 34.76% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 206 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 18.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.95.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $29,821, and the median income for a family is $39,688. Males have a median income of $23,542 versus $21,442 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,947. 12.3% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.1% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

She also said that the lack of satisfactory preparation had negative results, such as lowered morale among the student nurses and a lower quality of care for the patients in the institution.
