Burlington (49° 45′ 08″ N 56° 01′ 02″ W NST) an incorporated town located at the north side of the mouth of Green Bay Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Burlington, once named Northwest Arm, is a fishing and lumbering community that was permanently settled in the mid 1800's. The community was renamed in 1914 or 1915 for reasons unknown. The first school was erected in 1877 on the north side of the community. By 1884 another school was built, this time on the south side. Traditionally, a teacher would rotate, spending five months teaching in the school on one side, and then five months on the other.
Economy There was no large industry in the 1800's. The early settlers fished for cod and cleared land to grow potatoes, cabbage and small fruits. Keeping animals provided meat for the winter and milk and butter in season. Settlers built their own boats for fishing in Labrador, or they were employed by the inshore fishery.
