The University of Vermont was established in Burlington in 1791 as the Agricultural College of Vermont on land donated by Ira Allen.
Burlington is located at 44° 28' N 73° 9' W. Burlington lies roughly 40 miles (65 km) northwest of the state capital in Montpelier, about 70 miles (110 km) north of Rutland, and 95 miles (150 km) southeast of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
