The BurlingtonNorthern Railroad (AAR reporting mark BN) was a United States-based railroad operating between 1970 and 1995.
The BurlingtonNorthern was the product of a March 2, 1970 merger comprising the Great Northern Railway, the Northern Pacific Railway, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway.
On December 31, 1996, the BurlingtonNorthern merged with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to form the BurlingtonNorthern and Santa Fe Railway.
It was formed December 31, 1996 as the BurlingtonNorthern and Santa Fe Railway when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was merged into the BurlingtonNorthern Railroad.
The BNSF Railway is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BurlingtonNorthern Santa Fe Corporation, the holding company formed by the September 22, 1995 merger of BurlingtonNorthern, Incorporated and the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation.
One of the routes operated by the BurlingtonNorthern Santa Fe traverses the most northerly route of any railroad in the western United States.
