This railway began as the Midland Railway of Manitoba incorporated in 1903 and it built various lines around Winnipeg. The operations of the company were acquired by Manitoba Great Northern on July 1, 1909. The lines sold to City of Winnipeg and later to CN. The name was changed to Burlington Northern Manitoba Limited in 1971. The last name change was to Burlington Northern Santa Fe (Manitoba) in 1999.
