Burnham is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,170. The ZIP Code is 60633.


Burnham has a Chicago ZIP code, and is mistakenly considered part of Chicago. It lies just south of the Chicago city limits.


There are two sections of Burnham. The westernmost section surrounds Torrence Avenue, a north-south street. Torrence Avenue leaves this part of Burnham via a bridge, with Chicago on the other side. The eastern section surrounds Burnham Avenue, another north-south street. This section of Burnham ends at Brainard Avenue, where the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago lies on the other side. Upon entering Chicago, Burnham Avenue becomes Avenue O.


Burnham is bordered by Chicago to the north and Calumet City to the south, east and west.


Geography

Burnham is located at 41°38'8" North, 87°33'5" West (41.635535, -87.551284)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²). 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.62% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,170 people, 1,449 households, and 970 families residing in the village. The population density is 865.6/km² (2,244.8/mi²). There are 1,539 housing units at an average density of 319.5/km² (828.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 34.80% White, 54.17% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 7.58% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 15.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,449 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 20.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the village the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $39,053, and the median income for a family is $44,350. Males have a median income of $37,559 versus $27,885 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,747. 9.8% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
