A burr mill or burr grinder or sometimes known as the pep mill is a device to grind food products. They are often used for coffee beans but can be used for pepper, spices (particularly nutmeg), or other food products. A burr mill uses two revolving elements to crush or tear the large pieces (as opposed to blade grinders which chop the item repeatedly). They do not heat up as much as blade grinders, and they produce a consistent particle size. Many coffee aficionados claim that burr grinders are the best method for grinding espresso beans, and argue that it is a better investment to spend several hundred dollars on a high-quality grinder rather than on an expensive espresso machine. Some claim that for drip (percolated) or french-pressed coffee, using a cheaper blade grinder will not affect taste. However, it seems logical that a change in composition of grind would affect any type of coffee. Espresso brewing, with a dark reddish-brown foam, called crema or schiuma. ...

Manual burr grinders
Manual burr grinders utilise manual action to grind food products. Manual grinders typically require the turning of a rotating handle which, in turn, rotates one grinding element against another. While salt or pepper mills can have rotating handles, many do not; the rotation of the grinding elements is activated by the turning of the top part of the mill, while the bottom half is held firmly. Many grinders have different settings, allowing a choice between coarse and fine grinding. With coffee mills and other similar grinders, small quantities of the ground food products are collected in a drawer or a separate compartment at the bottom of the grinder as the grinding elements moved. The drawer or compartment is emptied when the desired quantity has been ground. With pepper and salt mills, the ground food products fall directly into the food they are intended to flavour; there is no special container to catch the ground elements. Some larger coffee mills are attached to a wall. Manual coffee mills can be used for grinding other food products. Electric burr grinders Electric burr grinders are powered by electricity from a battery or mains supply. An electric motor drives the grinding elements against each other. Electric grinders are, in general, much quicker and more convenient than manual grinders but can heat the food product being ground and sometimes suffer from static electricity.
