Butler is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,881.


Geography

Butler is located at 43°6'26" North, 88°4'8" West (43.107310, _88.068963)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.0 km˛ (0.8 mi˛). 2.0 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,881 people, 916 households, and 459 families residing in the village. The population density is 919.3/km˛ (2,376.2/mi˛). There are 938 housing units at an average density of 458.4/km˛ (1,184.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 97.40% White, 0.27% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 916 households out of which 20.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.8% are non-families. 42.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 25.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the village the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $38,333, and the median income for a family is $50,903. Males have a median income of $35,781 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $22,167. 2.4% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Butler is one of as successful farmers as there is in Waukesha County; he owns 250 acres of land, all well improved and finely located, containing almost every natural advantage.
In 1857, he was a member of the Wisconsin Assembly, and was, for a period of over thirteen years, a County Superintendent of the Poor, and for several years a member of the Town and County Boards of Supervisors; all of those offices he filled with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents.
In October, 1845, he married, in the town of Merton, Waukesha Co., Wis., Amy M. Allen; she was born in Conneaut, Ohio; came to Wisconsin in 1843, and died in the town of Lisbon, in 1870, aged 48 years.
