Buttonville is a suburban community that is located 9 km west of Markham, 29 km NE of Toronto, south of Lake Simcoe and 9 km SE of Richmond Hill. Woodbine Avenue runs through Buttonville. Buttonville is located in the western part of Markham. The population is presently about 30,000. Rouge River is to the northeast and Buttonville Airport is directly west of Buttonville. The superhighway (Highway 404) is to the west with 4 interchanges and the nearest interchange with the 407 ETR is 2 km south on Woodbine. The population live in the eastern, northeastern and the northern parts while the industrial area of Markham and is to the west and the south covering down to Steeles. The industrial area is home to technologic companies and is like Silicon Valley near the small airport. Farmlands formerly surround Buttonville and forests were around Buttonville especially to its south. Between 1980 and 2000, farmlands used to cover the south and north until developments arrive north of 16th Avenue. Farmlands today are north of Major Mac. History

Housing developments did not began until the 1960s near Cachet Woods at Woodbine and Major Mackenzie and the industrial area began popping up further south. In the 1980s housing developments came to the western part of Markham along with the industrial which later flowed with technological and financial companies including Allstate within the airport and more the southeast and Rodick Road. Buttonville was forst accessed with Highway 404 in the 1980s opened several interchanges. Between 1994 and 1996, more houses continued northeast of Buttonville and a few years later, north of the airport and more housing continued until 2004. Construction began in the mid-1990s and did not open until near the summer of 1998. The interchange with the 404 opened in June 1997. The toll superhighway (Highway 407) opened the interchange with the eastbound exit and the westbound entrance.
