The name "Butuan" is believed to have originated from the sour fruit "Batuan". Other etymology sources say that it comes from a certain "Datu Buntuan", a chieftain who once ruled over Butuan. Others yet believe it stems from the words "But-an" ("Person who has a sound and discerning disposition).

Butuan, chartered city, southern Philippines, capital of Agusan del NorteProvince, near the mouth of the Agusan River, on the northern coast of Mindanao.
