It is, essentially, a story about love.

It also includes elements of paganism, in particular it focuses on the female aspect of divinity, including the mother goddess, the Virgin Mary and the immaculate conception. Brightsurf: By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept by Paulo Coelho
By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept tells of Pilar, a frustrated scholar looking for some greater meaning in the endless cycle of her days.
Although a great read for romantics everywhere and an interesting prerspective change for religious, I am saddened to admit that 'By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept' is not as strong a novel in characterization, plot, and conclusion as 'The Alchemist'- hence the three stars.
