In 1778, the Mogilev gubernia was renamed as Mogilev namestnichestvo (abolished in 1796); its uyezds became part of the Belarusian gubernia.
The Gomel Gubernia was formed on April 26, 1919 to comprise 9 uyezds (Bykhov, Gomel, Gorki, Klimovichi, Mogilev, Orsha, Rogachev, Chausy, and Cherikov) of the abolished Mogilev gubernia; the Rechitsa uyezd of Minsk gubernia; and the Novozybkov, Mglin, Starye Duby, and Surazh uyezds of Chernigov gubernia.
In February 1923, the Bykhov uyezd was abolished.
