Bylakuppe (or Bailakuppe) is the location of "Lugsum Samdupling" (established in 1961) and "Dickyi Larsoe" (established in 1969), two adjecent Tibetan refugee settlements, in the west of Mysore district. According to a demographic survey carried out in 1998 the refugees make up a population of about 10 000. The settlements were established on land leased by the state government to resettle some of the Tibetan refugees who came to India during the 1950s and 1960s. It consists of a number of small camps/agricultural settlements close to each other, and has a number of monasteries, nunneries and temples in all the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Most notable among them are the large educational monastic institution Sera, the smaller Tashilunpo monastery (both in the Gelukpa tradition) and Namdroling monastery (in the Nyingma tradition). The Geluk (dge lugs) School was founded by Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), Tibets best known religious reformer and arguably its greatest philosopher. ... Particularly well known among the temples is the spectacular Golden Temple which is also a major tourist spot in the area.
