The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, or Byurakan Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Armenian Academy of Sciences. It is located on the slope of Mount Aragats in Armenia. History

Founded in 1942 by Viktor Ambartsumian, the observatory has discovered many flare stars, Supernovae, Herbig-Haro objects, and cometary nebulae. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the observatory fell into hard times. It has been the site of two major conferences on SETI, Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian (Վիկտոր Համբարձումյան in Armenian, Виктор Амазаспович Амбарцумян in Russian) (September 18, 1908 (Julian calendar: September 5) – August 12, 1996) was an Armenian-Russian astronomer. ...


Equipment

Byurakan Observatory's main telescope is a 2.6 m cassegrain reflector, while is also has a 1 and .5 meter Schmidt reflector as well as smaller telescopes.
