Compañía Anónima Nacional de Teléfonos de Venezuela (CANTV) is one of the first telephone service enterprises in Venezuela, founded in 1930, when businessman Félix A. Guerrero obtained a concession from the "Ministerio de Fomento" to build a telephone network primarily in the capital, and of course in the rest of the country. In 1950 the government acquired 100% of the shares, as part of a nationalization of industries, which ended in the early 1970s. The company was privatized in 1991, which resulted in a swift modernization of its technological infrastructure and an enhancement of its communications services offering. Its services include voice transmission, data, access to Internet, cellular telephony and directories of information. It is owned by Verizon Communications (GTE Venholdings), the Venezuelan Government, Telefónica S.A., Mercantil Servicios Financieros, America Movil, and several thousand small private investors, including company employees.
