CARTOSAT I is a stereoscopic Earth observation satellite built, launched and maintained by the Indian Space agency ISRO. Weighing around 1560 kgs at launch, Its applications will mainly be towards cartography in India. It was launched by the PSLV on 5 May 2005 from the newly built second launch pad at Sriharikota. Images from the satellite will be available from Space Imaging for worldwide distribution. Earth observation satellites are satellites specifically designed to observe Earth from orbit, similar to reconnaissance satellites but intended for non-military uses such as environmental monitoring, meteorology, map making etc. ... CARTOSAT I is a stereoscopic Earth observation satellite built, launched and maintained by the Indian Space agency ISRO.
Cartosat 1 has two state-of-the-art panchromatic cameras that take fl-and-white stereoscopic images in the visible light spectrum at a resolution of 2.5 meters.
Data from Cartosat 1 will be used for large-scale mapping, urban and rural development, land and water resources management, disaster assessment, relief planning and management, environmental impact assessment and various other geospatial and mapping applications.
