CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) enables the United States Postal Service to evaluate the accuracy of software that cleans and matches addresses. CASS is offered to all mailers, service bureaus, and software vendors who want to evaluate their address-matching software and improve the quality of their ZIP+4, carrier route, and five-digit coding accuracy. CASS certified products are listed in U.S. Post Office literature and on their web site. CASS certification only lasts for one calendar year. Applications must be certified again each year by submitting test data to CASS online. The online certification process has greatly improved the turnaround of the program with most results being processed within 24 hours. Each yearly CASS certification requirements are called cycles. The current CASS cycle is named L (valid 2007/8/1 thru 2008/7/31), The upcoming CASS cycle is named M. On the 1st of August, 2008, cycle M will supersede L.

The purpose CASS software will do is to correct and/or add street names, zip codes, street suffixes, etc to help ensure the address is correct and complete. A correct address in turn saves the Postal Service time, money and man-power by reducing the volume of 1) non-deliverable mail; 2) unsorted mail; 3) mail that is deliverable, but requires extra effort to determine the proper location to deliver it to.^[1]

Here the street and city name mispellingshave been corrected; street suffix, zip code and zip4 add-on have been added; and, in this case, the address was determined to be the location of a business.
