Background

On December 24, 2005 the "Pluto's Kiss" incident occurred. A virus causes all networks around the globe to crash, and all computers and systems connected to the network to experience malfunctions. Though the network recovers 77 minutes later, the fragile nature of the worldwide network has been exposed. It is later discovered that a 10-year-old grade school student has been behind the virus.

The United Nations' World Network Council (WNC), reintroduces a proposal that had been vetoed earlier in April of 2004, of the "New Generation Hyper Net" with the corporate network OS ALTIMIT as the standard OS, as it had been the only Operating System to evade "Pluto's Kiss". Though it should be noted, they will quickly sack any System Administrator who helps, sympathizes, or associates with anything they deem objectionable. They are also responsible for assigning pay to everyone involved in designing and maintaining The World.

Albireo

Real Name: Kazushi Watarai

As System Administrator and Captain of the Cobalt Knights, Kazushi Watarai and his avatar Albireo, a Long Arm, is dedicated in protecting the game he loves from system anomalies. He carries a polearm known as the "Spear of Wotan" that is specially programed to delete vagrant AIs. He is later data drained during an encouter with an cat-like AI named Macha and it's Guardian, and is rendered comatose. After recovering, CC Corporation officals believe him responsible for causing The Twilight Incident and promptly fires him. Balmung along with his partner Orca are legendary players, known for clearing the event known as "The One Sin". The fact that he was one of the .hackers is not widely known, and presumably not even to CC Corporation, as he was appointed System Administrator. Originally very zealous in upholding CC Corporation User Agreement and policies, his interactions with the player Kite has mellowed him out. No longer interested in rooting out cheaters, hackers, or bugs he spends his time thinking up weird special events for players. Real Name: Fujio

Part of the System Administrator Team but not a System Administrator himself, he is the personal assistant to Balmung. Most of Balmung's undone work are left to him, and a part of him resents Balmung's carefree attitude, something most unbecoming of a System Administrator. Though in truth, he just may be completely loyal to Balmung, despite his resentments.

Real Name: Saki Shibayama

An apprentice and subordinate of Albireo, Saki Shibayama shared the same love and dedication to The World as her mentor did. Not understanding why he left without a trace, she took over as Captain of the Cobalt Knights with an iron fist. CC Corporation grants her another version of the "Spear of Wotan". She ruthlessly and efficiently deleted bugs and vagrant AIs. She also deleted any and all characters, and their accounts, for the smallest infraction even it was not their fault an item was hacked. She desires to enter the rumored area known as Net Slum so that she may delete everything there. Her multiple encounters with Shugo coupled with sage advice from Balmung and her long lost mentor, cause her to question her own values and motives The Net Slum (also known as the Cyber Slum) is an illegal field existing in The World that was created as a sanctum for hackers, illegal characters, trash data, and similar unwanted/illegal cyberstuff. ...

Maki / Magi

Real Name: Saitou

Also a young personal assistant, Saitou is just as hard working and dedicated as Reki is. Taking cues from her superior, Kamui, she too is steadfast to CC Corporation policy, though she questions Kamui's methods. She has for a weapon a special book that can ban players when hit for one or more hours.

Junichiro Tokuoka

The chief director of the Japanese release of The World and an old friend of Kazushi Watarai, Junichiro Tokuoka become concerned when players begin to fall into comas around the world. When he starts investigating the connections between the comas and the Epitaph of Twilight, he is quickly fired. With the help of another player, Mai Minase, he delves deep into the mysteries of The World.

Piros

Masquerading as a regular player, he role plays his character, a Heavy Axeman, with a strange but classical dialect. He becomes interwined with Kite's quest. Graphic designer and programmer.
