The system was first formed in early 2001 when Global bought CHCH_TV in Hamilton, Ontario, formerly known as OnTV. The station airs several hit U.S. programs, but often Global, which is carried in more cities nationwide than CH, cherry-picks some of CH's hits and airs them on the main network.
CKRD in Red Deer, Alberta will soon be disaffiliated from the CBC and become the fourth CH station.
There are also some rumours circulating that CHBC in Kelowna, British Columbia will become the fifth CH station, as there are plans currently being considered by the CRTC for the CBC to install a repeater station of CBUT in the Kelowna area, and if that is the case, CHBC will have to disaffilate.
Many other stations not owned by CanWest Global also broadcast programs usually seen on the CH system, mainly private CBC affilates such as CHEX, CKWS and the Thunder Bay Televisiontwinstick of CKPR and CHFD.
