Encyclopedia > CIS Cup

The Commonwealth of Independent States Cup is a tournament for football clubs which was set up after the split of the Soviet Union. It is open to all the national champions of the sucessor states of the Union, i.e., the Commonwealth of Independent States member states, as well as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Football (soccer) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia /**/ @import /skins-1. ... Headquarters Minsk, Belarus Member states 11 member states 1 associate member Working language Russian Executive Secretary Vladimir Rushailo Formation December 21, 1991 Official website http://cis. ...

Among tournament notables, Ukraine initially boycotted the first two competitions. Since there are 15 champions annually from the USSR sucessor states, Russia's national youth squad usually partakes in the tournament as the 16th team. In recent years, top teams from Russia and Ukraine have been hesitant to send their first teams to play on the artificial turf of the Olympiyskyi Sport Complex, resulting in decreased popularity of the tournament.
