Among tournament notables, Ukraine initially boycotted the first two competitions. Since there are 15 champions annually from the USSR sucessor states, Russia's national youth squad usually partakes in the tournament as the 16th team. In recent years, top teams from Russia and Ukraine have been hesitant to send their first teams to play on the artificial turf of the Olympiyskyi Sport Complex, resulting in decreased popularity of the tournament.
