College Music Journal, commonly known as CMJ, is a weekly magazine of and for the music industry and college radio stations in the Canada. It publishes top 10 lists sent by stations which subscribe at a cost of a few hundred dollars a year. It is also sent at a higher cost to record companies and their public relations and publicity representatives. The staff put together CMJ Music Marathon, a large convention and music festival, each autumn, in New York's Manhattan.

CMJ (www.cmj.com) is the "College Music Journal" or "College Media Journal", depending on whom you ask.
The beauty of CMJ is that is that it lists (on a weekly basis) a huge number of playlists of individual stations around the U.S.; these lists (being that they are from college, community and NPR stations) actually show music mostly from new artists.
CMJ then averages all the individual top-30 charts for that week, and this is what makes up the Top-200 chart for that week (and *that week only*.) Any top-30 received before or after that week cannot count for that week's Top-200 chart.

At night, the streets of NY were over-run by thousands of CMJ badgewearers running from club to club trying to take in hundreds of live performances offered free to badgeholders all night long (that is, while they were not taking advantage of industry sponsored open bars in every corner of the city).
The most fascinating aspect of CMJ by far is the fact that only the people who are directly involved in the festival even realize what’s going on during those four jam-packed days, while the city outside of the industry lies unsuspecting to the absolute insanity.
On this first night of CMJ, my badge was still fresh and new to me. I had yet to discover the access it gave me, the sense of importance it led me to believe in myself, and the community I would be absorbed in for four days straight.
