History
CMT Canada launched on December 31, 1994 as the New Country Network (NCN). In many areas it replaced the American CMT service, as a result of a CRTC policy which effectively bars foreign services which are directly competitive with Canadian specialty services (a policy that has since been treated with more flexibility). In retaliation, CMT launched a complaint under NAFTA and threatened to cease carriage of videos from Canadian artists [1]. The matter was settled when NCN's ownership was restructured, giving CMT a minority ownership interest. The relaunched CMT Canada service debuted October 31, 1996 with the American CMT's format and has been here since. The first week of October 2006 CMT Canada released a new look that is similiar to the American CMT, which debuted in the Spring of 2004.
