Encyclopedia > CMX (comics)

CMX is a division of Wildstorm Productions, an imprint of DC Comics which in turn is owned by Time-Warner. It is DC's line of manga translations. WildStorm WildStorm Productions, or simply WildStorm, is an American publisher of comic books. ... In the publishing industry, an imprint is a brand name under which a work is published. ... DC Comics is an American comic book and related media company. ... Time Warner Inc. ... Manga )   (pl. ...

CMX launched with the goal of providing a diverse selection of manga, and, potentially, manhwa to the US market. Wildstorm, along with its parent company, DC Comics, enthusiastically supported the line. Unlike many other imprints, CMX pursued older manga along with hot new works, feeling that these stories deserved widespread disstribution and a chance at an American readership. Their initial lineup included classics of the shoujo genre, such as From Eroica with Love and Swan.

Controversy

One of CMX's initial launches was a title variously known as Tengo Tenge, Tenjho Tenge, and Ten Ten. The title was a strong fan favorite both in Japan and among manga readers in the States. However, when CMX released Tenjho Tenge, many fans were livid that title had been edited contentwise and changed graphically to appeal to a "larger demographic" -- in other words, edited to be acceptable to bookstores without shrinkwrap. Although it is not a secret that most manga publishers in the states do selectively edit manga art for content, Tenjho Tenge and CMX received a heavy amount of angry backlash. Original run 1 April 2004 – 16 September 2004 No. ...

CMX's announcement that all changes had been overseen and specifically approved by Oh! Great, the mangaka, did nothing to appease the vocal fans, who felt that changing the art removed a major plot point. [1] Although other fans felt that not explicitly showing sexual violence did not actually harm the flow of the the story, the fan community was in uproar. Some readers went so far as to suggest a boycott of all CMX titles. [2] Oh! great, born Ito Ogure (大暮 維人 Ōgure Ito, born February 22, 1972) is a mangaka. ... Mangaka ) is the Japanese word for a comic artist. ...

As of February 2007, CMX continues to publish Tenjho Tenge with edited art.

Interestingly enough, the furor surrounding Tenjho Tenge has not started a dialogue between manga fans and the American book chains, who are the ultimate arbitor of what content they will and will not carry in their stores. As many major American booksellers are leery of carrying "mature" titles, publishers often wisely choose not to pursue certain manga works that they would otherwise support. And as a result, fans of those works continue to face a limited selection of translated and unedited works.

At San Diego Comic Con this year, DC Comics unveiled their new line of manga, under the publishing title CMX.
CMX originally thought to have a schedule of a new issue of a given title every 3 months, but it seems after some discussion with fans at the panel, there might be a possibility of that waiting period being knocked down to bi-monthly.
