CNMAT (pronounced senn“mat), The Center for New Music and Audio Technologies is a multidisciplinary research center within University of California, Berkeley Department of Music. The Center's goal is to provide a common ground where music, cognitive science, computer science, and other disciplines meet to investigate, invent, and implement creative tools for composition, performance, and research. It was founded in the 1980's by composer Richard Felciano. Research

CNMAT's Research Program pursues inquiry and invention with a broad range of projects. A special interest is in the innovative application of technology to musical composition and performance, with emphasis on interactivity, real-time processes, and new instruments that combine exceptional quality with high degrees of expressive control. CNMAT, with its strong emphasis on the musical application of computer and related technologies, and with its cognitive science orientation to musical research and theory, is destined to play an essential role in future music teaching, composition, performance, and research.
CNMAT was founded in 1987 at the University of California, Berkeley.
CNMAT offers two regular semester-long courses and one month-long summer course as well as numerous short seminars and workshops on special topics throughout the year.

CNMAT has been actively involved in the development and application of the Max system from its invention by Miller Puckette who worked in David Wessel's Personal Systems group at IRCAM in 1986.
This was a rigorous test bed for early versions of the commercial version developed by Miller and David Zicarelli and distributed for many years by Opcode.
CNMAT hosted a Max/MSP night school in summer 1998, and we've made the patches from this class available online.
