A May 2006 press release from Spanish-language television network Telefutura suggests that a Champions League for clubs in the CONCACAF region will begin in July 2007. This league will be modeled on the UEFA Champions League. Instead of a tournament that involving all the CONCACAF clubs it will feature clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexican First Division in a unnamed Champions League MLS vs. MFL Tournament. This turned out to be a case of early information being incorect as it turned out that the tournament is actually not a CONCACAF competition but an inter-league tournament. However, CONCACAF's Executive Committee at their 2006 November meeting decided to "act upon" a proposal at their next meeting by the CONCACAF Secretariat to develop the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup into a larger “Champions’ League” style event, beginning in 2009.
