Biography

Cabas was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. His father Eduardo, musician and compositor himself, taught him from a the early age of five the rythms of his land. At six, Cabas formally studied piano, and became skilled at this and various other instruments, such as percussion. Through his teenage years, he acquired taste for classical music, rock and roll, electronic music, but also for his native cumbia and fandango music. As a young adult, Cabas travelled through the world. He first toured around Paris and ended up in New York, where he began to frequent night clubs. It was there that he met many prominent figures of jazz and salsa, and inspired him to write and compose music. Although New York represented a cold phase in Cabas life, for he felt alienated and depressed, Cabas overcame his fears with enthusiasm. This resulted in his self-titled album, Cabas, in 2000, which Cabas hoped to be popular and joyful. It became a huge success in Colombia, where his single Mi Bombón (My Bombon) leaded the charts of radio stations for three consecutive months, earning him a Gold Disc and a doble Platinum disc. To boost his success, Cabas begins a tour around Colombia, and reaches out to Venezuela and Ecuador, where he became highly popular among both young and old people, because of the ecclectic mixture of cumbia and rock in his songs, and because of his playful, childish and warm personality, that became his trademark during concerts.



In 2002, Cabas began to promote his music around Latin America and the United States, receiving good critics and even a feature article in the Billboard magazine, celebrating his first concert in the United States later on. Cabas has shared his stage with stars such as Lenny Kravitz in Mexico, and Shakira and Miguel Bosé in Spain. For album titles with the same name, see 2002 (album). ... In 2003, his second album Contacto (Contact), defined his style. Contact mixed percussion and drums with bass and rock beats, and his first single, La Caderona (The Big-hipped woman) recalled Mi Bombón's success. Cabas' first music video, from the song Leche (Milk), premiered around this time on MTV Latin America. Other singles such as Bolita de Trapo (Little rug Ball) also led the charts in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. His participation in a tribute concert to the legendary musician Carlos Santana increased his chance to reach other cultures. Cabas won the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist, the MTV Latin Awards for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Interpretation, and the People's Price and Best Rock Video in the Lo Nuestro Awards. On 2005, Cabas' third album, Puro Cabas (Pure Cabas), recorded in El Cielo Recording Studios in Monterrey, Mexico, counted with the support of famous Colombian composer Kike Santander, musician Sargento García, and producers Toy Hernandez and Sacha Triujeque. Before starting to record, Cabas had a specific idea of how Puro Cabas should sound, and worked personally in each song. Puro Cabas proved to be yet another huge success. Cabas' first single, La Cadena de Oro (The Gold Locket), was a major hit in Latin America, along with its music video that stayed MTV's top ten for quite a while. This hit was followed immediately by his second single, Increíble (Incredible), and by Cabas' performance in various Latin American music festivals. 2005 (MMV) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. ...
