Encyclopedia > Cadvan

Cadfan ap Iago (c. 580625; reigned from c. 615) (Latin: Catamanus; English: Gideon) was a King of Gwynedd. The son of King Iago, he likely assumed the crown of Gwynedd around 615, shortly after the Battle of Caer-Legion (also known as Chester), during which the forces of Gwynedd were defeated by Ęthelfrith of Bernicia. Despite Ęthelfrith's military victories, Cadfan continued to provide haven for Edwin of Northumbria, whom Ęthelfrith regarded as a major threat.

Cadfan was generally considered to have been a wise and just ruler, noted for his ability to maintain the rule of law and peace during an increasingly hostile period in British history. His memorial stone at Llangadwaladr Church in Anglesey refers to him as "the wisest and most splendid of all kings." He was succeeded by his son Cadwallon.

He was one of the last of the legendary kings of the Britons as accounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth.

Pellinor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (981 words)
She is discovered by Cadvan (one of the great Bards), who reveals to her that she too has "the Gift" of the Bards.
Cadvan soon discovers that her mother was the leader of the first circle of the destroyed School of Pellinor; it was previously assumed that there were no survivors.
Cadvan finds that Maerad's Gift was unusually powerful for one never formally taught; he begins to suspect who Maerad really is. Cadvan takes her to the School of Innail, to make the presence of a survivor from Pellinor known and to make Maerad a minor bard of Pellinor.
The Gift (4517 words)
Cadvan told her the orange-lipped shells were mussels, so she picked one up and, as Cadvan instructed her, split open the bivalve shell and picked out the flesh.
She hadn't thought of Cadvan having a lover, apart from Ceredin, who had died when he was a young man; but now she did think of it, there was no reason to suppose that he hadn't.
Cadvan and Nerili were simply two Bards, debating questions of high policy, and these subterranean feelings which so disturbed Maerad were but flutterings of her tired mind.
