Encyclopedia > Cajun One Step

Cajun Jitterbug, also called Cajun One Step is the simplest one of all Cajun dances. It has only one step!

It is danced under fast Cajun music.

Despite the single kind of step, variations of the handhold combined with turns give the dance infinitely many dance moves.

In a remote way Cajun Jitterbug is similar to Merengue.

Most of the dance is in double handhold.

Basic step

This is the way how to get the knack.

  • Start marching one-two, one-two, left-right, left-right: in place, sideways, forward, backward. Now pretend that you have a nail in one boot that hurts your heel, so that this foot steps on a toe, and you march in a limping way. This limping also gives you this slight bob-bob-bobbing up and down. It doesn't matter which foot limps; you may freely switch during the dance: the partner will probably not notice.

Using this step and holding each other's hands all the time, you may readily go in and out of cuddle (sweetheart), tie pretzels, turn inside out from face-to-face to back-to-back, or just simply walk around each other for a change in any of dance positions you happen to stuck in.
