Cal Poly is the registered tradename of California Polytechnic State University which is located in San Luis Obispo and was founded in 1901. Its sister campus, founded in 1966 is formally known as California State Polytechnic University, Pomona or Cal Poly-Pomona.
Prior to 1960, the founding campus located in San Luis Obispo was the only California Polytechnic College in the State of California. However, the college did possess two Southern California properties (one in Pomona and one in San Dimas) where student were allowed to enroll and completed classes in pursuit of a bachelors degree. As such, students enrolled at the Pomona/San Dimas unit desiring to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Polytechnic were required to complete their final year in San Luis Obispo. Following the reorganization of California's higher education system under the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960, the Pomona facility was granted status as a four year institution and allowed to grant bachelors and master degrees beginning in 1966. It was at this time the California Polytechnic College located in San Luis Obispo changed its name to California Polytechnic State College (later changed to State university in 1971) with the Pomona campus adopting the name California State Polytechnic College, Pomona the same year.
