NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Caledoniscincus (232 words)
The three species of Caledoniscincus were all recorded in the forest, but only Caledoniscincus haplorhinus was recorded from adjacent pasture and gaeac shrubland.
The Pindaû and Tia forests are only 25 km apart but Caledoniscincus auratus is clearly absent from the Pindaû forest and genetic studies in progress also indicate significant differences between the populations of Bavayia cyclura at each location.
The impact of the invasive Little Fire Ant on the lizard fauna at Tia is less clear, although there appears to be a clear difference in abundance of the common terrestrial skinks in the invaded and uninvaded areas studied.
Herpetology - Survey of the lizard fauna in sclerophyll forest at Pindai (502 words)
four skinks; the Common Litter Skink, Caledoniscincus austrocaledonicus; the Giant Litter Skink Caledoniscincus festivus; the Strand Litter Skink, Caledoniscincus haplorhinus; and the Pindaï Dwarf Skink Nannoscincus hanchisteus.
In this respect sclerophyll forest could be important for the conservation of species or populations within the Bavayia cyclura complex and given the high level of disturbance of lowland dry forest on the west coast.
The field survey of invaded and non-invaded plots showed a sharp decrease in the overall abundance, which was especially marked for the two dominant lizard species, Bavayia cyclura and Caledoniscincus austrocaledonicus, (respectively from canopy and ground level).
