The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is Southern Alberta's most well regarded orchestra and it is based in Calgary. The majority of their performances are in the Jack Singer Concert Hall of the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts. The Orchestra has a relatively short history which began in 1910 with the founding of the First Calgary Symphony by violinist A.P. Howell. In 1947 the New Calgary Symphony was formed by Clayton Hare with members of the Mount Royal Orchestra and the previous Calgary Symphony. 1910 was a common year starting on Saturday (see link for calendar). ...


In 1955 a Dutch conductor named Henry Plukker created the Alberta Philharmonic which in the same year merged with the Calgary Symphony. A new name, Calgary Phiharmonic Orchestra was chosen.

An amalgamation (1955) of the Calgary Symphony Orchestra and the Alberta Philharmonic, the latter established earlier in 1955 under the Dutch conductor Henry Plukker (b Dornbirn, Austria, 14 May 1908).
The Calgary Philharmonic Chorus was formed in 1963 by Haymo Taeuber who conducted the 70-voice choir until his departure in 1968, when it was disbanded.
The orchestra was recognized for imaginative programming of contemporary works by PRO Canada in 1981, 1982, 1987, and 1988; and by SOCAN in 1989 and 1990.
