Calhoun County is a county located in the Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 6,320. The county's county seat is Morgan, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 734 km˛ (284 mi˛). 726 km˛ (280 mi˛) of it is land and 9 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.20% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,320 people, 1,962 households, and 1,347 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (23/mi˛). There are 2,305 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 38.26% White, 60.60% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 2.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,962 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.70% are married couples living together, 23.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the county the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 33.30% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 130.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 139.80 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $24,588, and the median income for a family is $31,019. Males have a median income of $25,552 versus $16,554 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,839. 26.50% of the population and 23.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.20% of those under the age of 18 and 26.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Calhoun County's first courthouse was built in Morgan shortly after the county was created in 1854.
Georgia's 112th county was named for South Carolina U.S. Sen. John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), a noted advocate of states' rights.
In 1923, voters of Calhoun County petitioned for a referendum to move the county seat from Morgan to Arlington.
