Calhoun County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 15,069. Its county seat is Pittsboro6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,523 km˛ (588 mi˛). 1,519 km˛ (587 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,069 people, 6,019 households, and 4,255 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km˛ (26/mi˛). There are 6,902 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (12/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 69.41% White, 28.65% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 2.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,019 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.00% are married couples living together, 15.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,113, and the median income for a family is $34,407. Males have a median income of $26,458 versus $19,491 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,106. 18.10% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.20% of those under the age of 18 and 21.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Calhoun County residents were active in the trade and commerce stimulated by the Federalist wars of Texas and northern Mexico and the French blockade of Mexican ports in 1838 and 1839.
From 1940 to 1950 the population increased from 5,911 to 8,971.
Calhoun County school districts consolidated after 1955 and, by the 1980s, a single school district was operating eight elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.
