Calicut University is situated at Tenhipalam, in Malappuram district of Kerala, India. It was formed by transfer of affiliation of colleges from Kerala University. The university campus is situated on a hillock and is divided into two by the National Highway No. 17. The university has several affiliated arts & science colleges and professional colleges in the districts of Trichur, Palghat, Malappuram and Calicut. Two government medical colleges affiliated to the university are Calicut Medical College and Trichur Medical College. Affiliated private medical colleges include Jubilee Mission Medical College, Trichur, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Trichur and MES Medical College, Perintalmanna.

Various undergraduate courses are available in the affiliated colleges. Postgraduate course are available both at the affiliated colleges and at the university departments. PhD Research programmes are also available at the university departments and recognised institutions.

The University has full fledged teaching departments and many centres and schools of study. The university has two major extension centres, one at Thrissur and the other at Calicut. Another centre is being established in Vatakara. Besides these, the university has Teacher Education Centers in all the five districts and advanced computer science centres in 13 places offering MCA, MSc Computer, and BSc IT courses. The Calicut university institute of engineering and technology, or CUIET is located at the university campus on NH-17. There are more than 150 colleges affiliated to the University among which are Teacher Training Colleges, Engineering colleges, Medical colleges, Law colleges, IHRD Centers, Fine arts college, Oriental Title Colleges and College for Dentistry, Nursing and Homeopathy.
