Califon is a borough located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 1,055.

Geography

Califon is located at 40°43'13" North, 74°50'12" West (40.720250, -74.836533)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.5 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.5 km˛ (1.0 mi˛) of it is land and 1.02% is water.


Califon borders Lebanon Township and Tewksbury Township.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,055 people, 401 households, and 301 families residing in the borough. The population density is 419.9/km˛ (1,093.2/mi˛). There are 410 housing units at an average density of 163.2/km˛ (424.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.67% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 401 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% are married couples living together, 4.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the borough the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $76,657, and the median income for a family is $85,963. Males have a median income of $59,167 versus $41,125 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $31,064. 4.3% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The Califon Historical Society kicks off the Holiday Season with ats annual Antique Toy and Train Display "Christmas at the Station" on Sunday, DEcember 3rd from 11:00 A.M. tp 5:00 PM at the Station Museum at 25 Academy Street, 25 Academy Street, Califon, New Jersey.
Though the Central of New Jersey Railroad built both a wooden freight station and passenger station, the citizenry of Califon, proud of their town, replaced it at their own expense with this stone structure.
Califon citizens have always been proud of their town.
