A special election will be held in the 50th Congressional District of California to choose a new member of the United States House of Representatives to replace Randy Cunningham, who resigned November 28, 2005 after pleading guilty to bribery, wire fraud, mail fraud, and tax evasion charges. The special primary election will be held on April 11, 2006. If a single candidate wins a simple majority, he or she will serve out the rest of Cunningham's term. If no candidate wins a simple majority, the top vote-getters in each party will compete in a runoff or special general election to be held on June 6, 2006.
