California Coast University is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE)[1] and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) [2]. Since its founding in 1973, CCU has offered undergraduate and graduate programs in business, management, psychology and education. The primary method of learning is directed independent study. Research, study, and testing are accomplished off-campus. Traditional classroom attendance is not offered.
Accreditation CCU is approved by the State of California and is authorized to award degrees up to the doctoral level. CCU received national accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) January 2005. The DETC is recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). At present, DETC accreditation authorizes CCU to award degrees up to the masters level. Since DETC has been recently approved by USDE to accredit professional doctorates including the D.B.A and Ed.D, CCU is applying to DETC to award degrees at this level. CCU degrees awarded before the accreditation date are considered unaccredited, as is the case with all schools that receive accreditation. Unaccredited degrees may not be acceptable to some employers or other institutions. In some jurisdictions the use of unaccredited degree titles may be restricted or illegal, for example in the State of Texas. [3]
