California State Route 242 is a short three-mile connector route that links Interstate 680 north of Pleasant Hill to California State Route 4 in Concord. Originally signed as CA-24 along CA-4 and CA-160, ending in Sacramento, it was truncated to CA-242's present terminus. In 1991, CA-24 was truncated even more to its present terminus. The segment between I-680 and CA-4 was then renumbered as CA-242, though the route was signed as 242 as early as 1987. Currently, along with Interstate 580, CA-24, Interstate 680, and CA-4, it serves as the most direct route between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento River Delta region of Northern California.
