This road consists of approximately sixteen miles (23 kilometres) of six-percent grade, and is the main feeder road from the San Bernardino City area to the resorts of the San Bernardino National Forest. It alternates between long straight stretches and curved sections. There are three passing lanes, at the 2200 foot level, the 4000 foot level, and the 5600 foot level. It is possible to ascend this road at a steady speed of about 50 MPH (80 KPH), slowing for some of the more severe turns, but when descending it is prudent to do so at a somewhat slower pace, and in a lower gear. Because of the long straightaways leading up without warning to the tight turns, drivers unfamiliar with this road frequently either go over the side or, if they are riding their brakes on the way down, arrive at the final set of tight turns just past the bottom passing lane without enough brakes left to retain control. For these reasons it is considered to be one of the most dangerous public highways in North America.
