The city's most celebrated landmark is the monument of Philippine revolutionary Andres Bonifacio at the end of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), thus taking the name of the place Monumento. The monument of the proletarian hero of the Philippine Revolution was created by the nationalist sculptor Guillermo Tolentino to mark the first encounter between Bonifacio's Katipunan group against Spanish soldiers on Aug. 3, 1896. It was erected in 1933. Recently, the present administration had made renovations on the environs of the monument, including the Bonifacio Circle where the actual monument was put up and the Caloocan stretch of EDSA that is 100 meters away from the monument. |
