Controversy

According to 7News, during the financial year 2005-06, Caltex recorded a 50% rise in profit per barrel of oil. The news comes as petrol prices in Australia assume a financial strangle hold on most families in the country. It is believed many other oil companies in Australia have recorded similar profit increases. Many independent private investigations continue.

The quiet burial of the investigation is, however, an embarrassment for the ACCC and a vindication of Caltex and its peers, who have loudly, aggressively and persistently proclaimed not just their innocence but their status as victims of an ACCC agenda.
The raids on Caltex last April, amid a blaze of damaging publicity for the company, and subsequently Shell and Mobil, represents one of the more controversial episodes in the routinely controversial tenure of Allan Fels as ACCC chairman.
The Caltex raids were, for the commission, a no-risk chance to confirm its reputation as a champion of the consumer prepared to tackle the sinister forces of Big Oil, to buttress its position with the politicians and undermine the credibility of the big end of town on competition policy issues.
