Calverton is an unincorporated area located on the boundary between Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, Maryland.


Geography

As an unincorporated area, Calverton's boundaries are not officially defined. Calverton is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°3'25" North, 76°56'41" West (39.057009, -76.944805)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 12.2 km² (4.7 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,610 people, 4,543 households, and 3,230 families residing in the area. The population density is 1,031.5/km² (2,673.1/mi²). There are 4,661 housing units at an average density of 381.3/km² (988.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 43.09% White, 34.06% African American, 0.14% Native American, 16.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.61% from other races, and 3.57% from two or more races. 6.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,543 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.24.


In the area, the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.0 males.


The median income for a household in the area is $63,990, and the median income for a family is $72,958. Males have a median income of $44,425 versus $39,563 for females. The per capita income for the area is $28,107. 4.0% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In the absence of reliable statistics it is difficult to ascertain the growth of the population in the colony during the period elapsing from 1634 to 1690; according to the estimate already given, in 1671, it was 20,000.
The Catholics of Maryland were not partisans of the House of Stuart, and, furthermore, the sympathies of the Cardinal of York were known to be not on the side of the Society of Jesus, to which the Maryland missionaries almost all belonged.
The College of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the philosophical and theological House of Studies of the Society of Jesus, is at Woodstock; the Redemptorist House of Studies is at Illchester, and the normal school and novitiate of the Christian Brothers at Ammendale.
