Calwa is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Fresno County, California, USA. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 762.

Geography

Calwa is located at 36°40'51" North, 119°44'2" West (36.680749, -119.733978)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 762 people, 208 households, and 177 families residing in Calwa. The population density is 1,089.7/km² (2,845.1/mi²). There are 227 housing units at an average density of 324.6/km² (847.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 25.46% White, 0.92% Black or African American, 2.62% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 65.88% from other races, and 4.59% from two or more races. 94.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 208 households out of which 44.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 22.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% are non-families. 9.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.66 and the average family size is 3.90.

The population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.9 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $28,983, and the median income for a family is $28,285. Males have a median income of $32,167 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the community is $8,292. 28.0% of the population and 27.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.9% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
